I am not the world's biggest seafood fan. I have never (knowingly) eaten anchovies. So I suppose it is interesting that I would choose this of all the savoury recipes in the book to cook. I suspect it was because sardines remind me of a time when my family lived next door to my grandma - and if we visited at lunchtimes, she would often make us sardine sandwiches. So to me sardines seem like one of those foods that were once very much in fashion and now are not.

Once I'd made my mind up to make this recipe it was easy enough to source all of the ingredients.... with the exception of anchovy sauce. I looked in supermarket, delicatessen and specialist food stores but couldn't find the mysterious ingredient. At length I decided to just make a sauce by turning canned anchovies into a puree. If anyone knows if anchovy sauce was something more than this I'd love to know!

With all ingredients in hand the rest of the process was incredibly simple. The sardine paste came together remarkably easily. The white sauce was like any other white sauce but with the addition of some of the pureed anchovies.

As for flavour - if you've ever bought store bought fish paste (in the sandwich spread section) you have the perfect reference for the sardine paste. It tastes precisely like that. The white sauce with the anchovy addition was piquant and I would have liked it very much..... IF I HADN'T SLATHERED BOTH PASTE AND SAUCE ON THE TOAST IN LAYERS AS THICK AS MY LITTLE FINGER!!!

Warning. Do not slather either paste or sauce on the toast in layers as thick as anyone's little finger.

I highly recommend using the paste like any sandwich spread (in a thin, sensible layer) and the sauce as a light addition.

About M. C. McClintock

Sometimes finding information about the lady who donated a recipe from the cookbook can be like pulling hen's teeth. A lot of effort for very little result and what little you find is sketchy and not certain to be related to the lady in question. Other times the first dig delivers a treasure of information. This was the case with M. C. McClintock. I immediately found a number of newspaper articles about the wedding of Mabel Carl Whitely to Richard McClintock in the City Tabernacle Church. Yes, yes and yes!

With the extra information about her maiden name I was able to find some sweet articles about how she sang a solo at the Woombye ANZAC (soldier memorial) ceremony in 1930 and continued lending her voice to solos at the church and other events. I imagine she must have had a lovely singing voice to be in demand at weddings.

It seems like she was very active in social organisations. She was listed as a donor of an item during the Waverley Masonic Lodge social night at the School of Arts. Just prior to her wedding she received the pre-wedding gift of a silver tea set from the Brisbane Women's Club for her 6 years of service.

There was a mention about her bridal shower "china tea" held by her bridesmaid Nan Shaw in the gossip column of May of 1936 then a lovely write-up about her June wedding at the City Tabernacle. I enjoyed the descriptions about what the bridesmaids wore and what Mabel wore for her going-away dress. aineadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03269483214793793469noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377291612928010259.post-38275584880960776662014-06-27T21:13:00.004-07:002014-06-27T21:14:03.859-07:0070s green frock...
I mentioned a few posts back that I had bought a green 70s frock at the latest Frock-Up Brisbane Vintage fair. I got around to taking a photo of it not long before my holiday. (Holiday = the long absence on this blog while I prepared and traveled!) The coat worn with it is the one featured in my previous thrifting post.
All of these came from two sales in my local area - less than 5 minutes drive from my house.

A Chinese painted tin, four napkins and a little clipper ship diorama.

With all the napkins I've been buying I really should have a dinner party or two!
The tea tin now stores my vintage hair wave clips.
And the ship diorama? Well, my husband dreams of one day having a 'man den'. The kind of place with a big, solid leather-topped desk, a swivel captains chair and walls of books. Perhaps a dart board. I thought that when his dream comes true, the little clipper ship would look perfect in his 'man den'. Until then, it looks fab on my fireplace mantle.

I'm not sure which find I was more pleased with out of the lot of clothes and accessories. The sage cropped trench-coat is a now favourite piece in my wardrobe... but then, how often do you buy a 1940s enamel and coral necklace, brooch and earrings set still attached to its original felt board for just $20?

I also have to admire the navy beaded clutch (not yet used! Shame on me!). And the jangly bead brooch was a bargain at 50c. It is so perfectly matched to the trench-coat too! aineadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03269483214793793469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377291612928010259.post-54496470291167735382014-04-15T15:06:00.003-07:002014-04-15T15:06:46.877-07:00Beautiful Books!I am so grateful that friends around me appreciate my interest in vintage items and think enough of me to gift me with pretty and special things they find in that field.

My husband's work friend was helping downsize his grandparent's goods in their home. One of the items to go was a 1920s book on wearing clothes in colours and cuts to suit your features. He was kind enough to offer it to me and I was all big eyes when saying "oh! Yes please!" I hope to take some photos of the illustrations inside and include a few snippets of the information contained within at a later date. But for now, here's a photo of the gorgeous cover.

The next gift was my bestie, Sassy D, who was at an antique store on the Sunshine Coast when she saw a music book with an Alice in Wonderland theme. She immediately thought of me and bought it - and I love it! Each piece in the book is a theme for one of the characters from the tale of Alice in Wonderland. The scores are simple enough for me to play and are very whimsical. One day, when I feel confident enough I might record myself playing them on my piano and post on this blog. But I'm very shy when it comes to my (lack of) piano skills so that might be a while coming!

Another book was a gift from Lady L. She bought this from a sale of old library books, thinking of how much I'd enjoy it. She was right. I commented on how beautiful the cover was before she had a chance to tell me it was a gift for me. I also love the hark back to a time when people created their own entertainment at home and parties using their own musical skills. Again, the music in this book is simple enough for me to play and sing.

Scout-Mama C knew I would love this old cook book with a careful
selection of recipes guiding a beginner through their early cooking
adventures. The pancake recipe in this was wonderful...

Still in a cookery theme, my long-time friend Ja Ce saw an old Queensland School Manual for Home Economics. These are such wonderful basic recipes - designed to teach young people to cook.

Lastly I received this beautiful manual of manners in the 19th century from my lovely friend, Landlady P last night. It has some of the most darling fashion plates and photos from the 1800s throughout. My 2014 project list included making a 1860s outfit so this will be some good inspiration!

It is a strange feeling when people recognise my love of something and
care enough to gift me with items they think I'll love. When the item
belonged to a loved one I feel somehow great and humble at the same time
- proud that I've been given charge of something that meant something
to that person. aineadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03269483214793793469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377291612928010259.post-32009606931835967662014-04-12T15:42:00.002-07:002014-04-13T03:50:32.955-07:00Ginger Nuts - Two Fails. Ginger Nuts (Miss Jean Murray)
pg 19

226g butter

2 cups sugar

4 tsp ground ginger

4 tab golden syrup

2 cups S. R. Flour

Grease a cookie tray and preheat the oven to a 180 degrees C. Cream the butter and sugar. Add the ground ginger and mix through. Add golden syrup and flour and mix through on a moderate speed.

Drop teaspoons of the mixture onto greased trays. Bake for 15min.

Now this recipe is simple enough - so I'm still a bit sour that I messed it up so badly twice over.

Let me explain....

The first time I attempted this recipe I thought I'd be smart and use the Thermomix I had on loan. For those not in the know, a Thermomix (TM) is a very fancy kitchen device which can mill, mix, weigh and heat all in the same bowl. I thought using the TM to make the recipe might help with reducing mess. I weighed ingredients in the TM then used it to cream and mix the ingredients (adding in order according to the recipe). All seemed fine. The batter was the right consistency for drop cookies, that is, a little firm but soft enough to spoon onto trays.

But then 5 minutes into cooking time I smelled disaster. The cookies had melted into discs, merging with each other and were entirely burned underneath.

These were inedible - and it was the same for each batch. I considered that the TM had been a bit overzealous in creaming the mixture and the friction of it's strong motor had heated the butter too much causing the spread.

(Note - this kind of spread of cookie dough is often caused by the butter being too warm or the tray being to warm. I put these cookies onto cold trays that were not pre-heated so that meant it was the butter. I had put the butter directly from the fridge into the TM so that meant that it was the TM that had warmed it.)

So - I tried a second time, on a different day, but this time I used normal scales and electric mixer - but only half the ingredients.

And oddly, I got an entirely different batter mixture. I had to press the crumbly mixture into balls and flatten them on the baking trays - which is not consistent with the recipe at all.

I forged on regardless and ended up with some spectacularly tasty cookies. They had a beautiful cracked appearance and were very firm on the outside but softer inside. But I can't help think that I somehow messed something up and this wasn't how they were 'supposed to be'.

About Miss Jean Murray

The lovely lady from the Tabernacle Baptist Church who met with me didn't have any information about Miss Jean Murray - so I'm left to find what I can through accessible public records like online newpapers to find any hint about this particular girl.

And there were plenty of mentions of Miss Jean Murrays in the Brisbane Courier Mail in the 1930s/40s! There was a Miss Jean M. Murray and a Miss Jean E. Murray and so forth! With so many Miss Jean Murrays it was impossible to determine which was our Jean.

I now know that the cookbook was published in 1941 and that the recipes were donated by ladies active in the church, not from further afield so I limited my articles to those in Brisbane in 1935 - 1944.

There was mention of a Miss Jean Murray who was part of the Fairholme Old Girls' Association. She spent an evening knitting for the war effort in Clayfield according to this article in September 1940. (As a bonus, the article underneath is instructions on how to crochet a really cute turned turban! I'd like to give it a go!)

There was also mention of a Miss Jean Murray who acted in two 'Scottish plays', one in 1939 and the other in 1941.

A Miss Jean Murray hosted an luncheon at Rowes for her friend Miss Barber to celebrate her upcoming wedding in 1940. With pink rosebud sprays on the table too! I have never considered Rowes as a lovely place to entertain - it's since become a nightclub - but this is the second mention found during this project of dainty celebrations held at that venue.

The most exciting article for me was one that had a romantic story and even a photo! Could this be the face our Miss Jean Murray? Though I'd like to think so, the story has her marrying in the Ann Street Presbyterian Church and I find it unlikely that our Jean Murray of the Baptist Church would marry in a different church, so close to her own.aineadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03269483214793793469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377291612928010259.post-16538014953540458052014-04-11T05:46:00.001-07:002014-04-11T05:46:47.639-07:00A Friday FiestaToday's outfit had a bit of a fiesta feel...
Two comfy Summer frocks,
pretty as can be
were waiting at a garage sale,
waiting just for me.

Gleefully I grabbed them up
and asked the girl the price.
She said, "$5 for the both."
I paid her in a trice.

Another sale I overturned
some mottled orange beads
and also bought a silver brooch
with nicely etched leaves.

When I saw this little pup,
Sassy D also joined the party at the eleventh hour so we tackled the market on the Friday night, a cheerful party of four.

Poisoned Kitty wore a pretty blue frock she had sewn herself from a vintage 40s pattern. Matched with simple pearls and white T-bar shoes the outfit looked so fresh and feminine. TrinnyT wore a skirt she had sewn herself with a popping red cardigan. Her gorgeous cane handbag was only slightly outdone by her giant head-flowers bought from Kitten D'Amour. Sassy D was wearing a 50s tiki style skirt she'd sewn herself with a simple modern blouse.

But... about the market itself! The exhibit this year about clever thriftiness in buying, altering and making clothes during WWII was much smaller than last year's Marilyn themed one but was still worth a view.

Once again, the market used both hall spaces for the event. The main hall upstairs housed the exhibits as well as a number of sellers stalls The underneath of the hall was a decent-sized space put aside for individuals wanting to sell things from their own wardrobe, the tea room and a little cinema showing fashion shorts from the 40s in black and white. The other large shed-hall was used for a number of other sellers. As always, this market impressed me with the range of sellers from those selling high-quality 40s items for $300 to the cheaper options where you can score a cute dress for $20. There was also a make-up and hair artist booth, a stall selling fashion plates from magazines (don't get me started on what I hate about that particular thing *cranky face*) and a number of stalls offering homewares and vintage haberdashery.
It seems that at every market there is always that one item I see, photograph and don't buy. Later I love-eye the photo evidence and regret the choice to leave it behind. My regret this time was this beaded cardigan for $45. (Upstairs hall, back corner for any Brisbanites who want to dash to the fair this weekend!)
I did end up buying a dark green patterned 70s frock. The colour and pattern caught me, it was at the right price and it fit. I was moved to buy it though 70s is not my favourite era. I keep saying this but keep wearing more and more 70s in my daily outfits. No pic of the dress as yet - but soon I promise.

After shopping we attended the tea room under the main hall. This has become something of a tradition when we visit this particular vintage market. I adore the way this tea room is run. They use antique tea cups and tea pots to serve the tea. They have lovely embroidered table cloths and pretty little greenery table decorations. And vintage magazines to flick through while you sip your tea. How perfect.
Any girls in Brisbane keen for a vintage hunt this weekend should head to the Mount Gravatt showgrounds today or on Sunday to see if they can find their own treasured piece. Entrance to the market is $12. aineadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03269483214793793469noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377291612928010259.post-90256969392593175502014-03-21T15:39:00.001-07:002014-03-21T15:39:21.187-07:00A Mixed Basket of Thrifted Goods

Part of the fun of thrifting is that you never know what you will find. One time it is a stack of vintage brooches, another time might overturn the cute 70s a-line skirt of your dreams. Sometimes you don't find a single scrap of clothing or a worthy accessory at all.

But you always find something.

I went to two different sales with Sassy D to overturn this motley pile of goods.

A fabulous picnic basket, with crockery included. This has already seen a bit of use at three different picnics.

A blue-work vase. I intend to put a hole in the bottom of this and plant some red geraniums in it. Can't you just imagine it?!

A bust of a baroque maiden, now resting atop my piano.

An embroidered sheer tablecloth

Two silver-plated high-tea servers.

A crafting pattern to cross-stitch Beatrix Potter characters.

Two lots of fabric, one which became my picnic tablecloth with a bit of stitchery.

A rubber cloth (for my kitchen to help open jars).

A set of rose note-cards

A fabulous 60s book called 'Women's World' with all kinds of advice about how to be a women in the modern (1960s) day world. Some of the advice is priceless.

Above is the produce of visiting two sales. Just three measly purchases. I learned a valuable lesson that morning - don't go to a yard sale if you are only interested in one or two items in the advertisement photos. I went to a particular sale because the ad photos showed a small collection of really cute vintage figurines. You know the type, those cute and kitschy kittens, lambs, puppies and elves that everyone' s parents had as they were growing up. I was super keen on those figurines. I was all set to buy the lot.

I made sure I was the first person at the sale and when the seller opened the doors to her garage, I strode in purposefully. I just knew those cute figurines would be mine! And they would have been too, if it wasn't for dealers who contacted the seller days before and came and bought nearly every one, leaving only a few damaged and lesser-attractive ones behind. So the little lucky elf in the picture above became mine, because a dealer decided he wasn't cute enough. The rest of the sale was a flop and it was a big ol' waste of fuel to get out there.

However the morning wasn't an entire loss. At the other sale I found the teacup of my dreams. It was dainty. It was charming and it was coated in flowers and ribbons of pink and blue. It had a very fine fracture in the bottom of the cup that meant it wasn't useful for drinking but that was okay by me. It has a new purpose now. It sits on my dressing table, holding pretty necklaces and earrings.aineadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03269483214793793469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377291612928010259.post-89193455630404785442014-03-15T16:27:00.000-07:002014-03-15T16:27:00.106-07:00Australian Home Journal - May 1946The Australian Home Journal was a magazine publication which ran from the late 1800s through to 1983. The magazine had a sewing focus and each edition had free sewing patterns included. As well as this, each edition had a few pages of models showing the latest mail-order patterns which readers could order.

You can find Australian Home Journals - as well as the sewing patterns - for sale on Ebay, at charity shops and at jumble sales priced anywhere between 50c to $25. I hope you enjoyed looking through the snippets of this magazine. I have a decent and growing collection of these magazines and I hope to share bits and pieces from them over time. aineadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03269483214793793469noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377291612928010259.post-78697961378910081632014-03-12T03:42:00.000-07:002014-03-12T03:42:11.416-07:00Thrifting PrizesI did a lot of thrifting last year and I was shamefully lax on updating the blog on the matter. So readers beware! There's a backlog of 2013 (July onwards) thrifting posts coming your way!

Here are a bunch of thrifting prizes I scored at 3 different sales on one Saturday morning. Most of these were from a church jumble sale.

Plates galore - because I never get sick of eating from a pretty place setting. There's also a cookie server (not real silver or even silver plated but rather pretty) and a stack of dutch blue napkins.
The vintage airlines cookie tin now stores hair accessories that are out of use while my hair is short. The smaller Chinese patterned tin holds my crochet hooks while the larger square one stores lace applique pieces in my craft room. The giant Chinese fan... just because.
So. Many. Nylon. Scarves! A little heart rhinestone brooch, a few necklaces a 70s metal belt (sadly, too small for me) and a very sweet little tin. I'm surprised I've still not worn that beautiful red blue and yellow scarf second from the right. Perhaps today I will.
Does this fabric look a little familiar? It became a 70s skirt under the needle of my sewing machine and I wrote a post about it here.
And last but not least is a 70s smock and a housecoat. The housecoat gets more use than I should say - indeed I'm wearing it now while writing this post and drinking my morning coffee.
Egg and Cheese Omelette (Mrs. G. Hutton)
pg 68

1 tab plain flour

1 tsp salt

3 1/2 tab water

3 eggs

1/2 cup grated cheese

300ml milk

2 spring onions

3- 4 cherry tomatoes, halved

pepper to taste

bacon (1-2 rashers)

Mix the flour and salt in a bowl. Add enough water to make a smooth paste. (The amount of water required will differ depending on how old your flour is and other factors like humidity. Add three whole eggs and beat well. Add grated cheese and milk and beat until a good batter is made. Fry in a greased fry pan over a low heat. When the omelette is almost set, add the shallots and lightly fried cherry tomatoes to the top.

Once the omlette is completely set, give it a dusting of freshly cracked pepper and serve it on toast with fried bacon as a side.

Note: you could also cut up the bacon, fry it and add it on top as well as/in lieu of the tomato.

This was my first meal for 2014, breakfast on New Year's Day. (So very behind in my blogging right now!)

At first I balked at adding so much salt but I decided to remain faithful to the recipe. I do admit I made it a very small teaspoon of salt. I certainly didn't add any extra salt along with the pepper as recommended in the recipe. If I were making it again, I would probably halve the salt as I found the finished omelette a little too salty for my tastes.

I used pre-shredded pizza cheese for my omelette but would maybe consider trying different cheeses to see how I could change the flavour, for example a sharp vintage cheese or a grated swiss cheese might add something extra.

All in all, a very nice omelette recipe and a very nice way to start the year!
We've already seen a recipe by Mrs. G. Hutton on this blog - a cinnamon tea cake which I obviously liked (captioned the 'best cinnamon tea cake ever'.) With nothing more to add to the write-up, I'll leave you with a picture of myself enjoying the delicious (albeit slightly too salty) omelette for breakfast!
I get enthused for short spans of time and then neglect it for too long. Our Australian Summers are not very forgiving of this.

But somehow, despite my neglect, a few seeds I planted made it to maturity. Then one day I realised there were beautiful flowers blooming.

The beauty of flowers, especially cottage flowers, is transient so I tried to capture the moment in a photo. So here it is - the Nigella in the Mist that grew despite my lack of care and a poem by George Mayer.
I would dare to say it is the best of it's type in Brisbane, only it's not really in Brisbane. It's out in the suburbs North of Brisbane - in Nundah to be precise. But don't let that put you off.

Queenies Tea House is worth a visit for their lemon sponge cake alone. Their excellent range of teas, including the Marco Polo blend with rhubarb in it (love!) and the atmosphere of the place are further reasons to head out into the suburbs for a visit.

They also do one of the nicest and best-value high teas in Brisbane. It is advisable that you book if you want a high tea.

My lovely friend Poisoned Kitty decided it had been too long since our group of girls got together for a vintage high tea so she organised one at Queenies in early February. Here are some photos I took of the occasion.

I was rocking a new hair cut - very 20s bob. Though you can't really such much of it in this shot, I was wearing the gorgeous 50s mint green hat my friend TrinnyT gifted to me and a vintage two strand faceted glass bead necklace I had thrifted.

And here's a pic of the beautiful TrinnyT herself in a 40s frock she sewed last year. I envy her victory rolls. Beside her is Lady L in her lovely 60s pink frock - an etsy purchase, I believe.
Sitting beside me was the most stunning Diana Daring. Her hair is the most amazing mix of colours. She is entering in the Miss Pinup Australia competition this year! You can see the beautiful colours in her hair and vote for her here.
Poisoned Kitty and her wonderful Mum were in attendance. Poisoned Kitty was wearing a sunny yellow frock she'd sewed from a 40s pattern and a soft white vintage hat. Her mum was wearing a frock Poisoned Kitty had made for her.
Sweet Bee came along in a pretty blue frock she'd sewn herself from a 50s pattern. I didn't get to chat with her as much as I'd liked because she was at the other end of the long table to me. Perhaps next time!
Sassy D was in a utterly gorgeous white and navy polka-dot frock that she'd made herself from a 50s sewing pattern. It matched the navy and white vintage hat she'd bought perfectly.
Classy K was in a celebratory mood, having just become engaged to her beau that week. Congratulations Classy K! She was wearing a charming brown 20s frock she had sewn herself with her hair up in a pretty chignon.
It was really special to spend a morning with such great company. We'll have to do it again soon! aineadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03269483214793793469noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377291612928010259.post-67589339020635644492014-02-26T23:55:00.001-08:002014-02-26T23:55:44.878-08:00Carte Postale - Part II've always been fond of letter writing though I'm usually a bit slack about getting to a postbox. (My poor little Sister received a letter that I had written a year before finally posting it!) So when I saw a box of postcards for $2 while hunting on the Garage Sale Trail I snapped them up gleefully.

The postcards are reprints of posters from Paris during the Belle Epoque period, all of them with a feline theme, which suited me quite well.

After watching the first installment of the TV production of "Going Postal" (an adaptation of the Terry Pratchett novel) I was full of aspirations of single-handedly supporting the modern postal service.... I'm ambitious like that! I decided that a good start was to get a move on writing and sending my cards.

I penned up a brief message on the back of the first postcard. I attached a stamp to the back and made plans to slip it in a postbox while on my walk the next morning.

It sat on my desk, such a pretty card, a lovely item in itself, and I felt a bit sad that to send it out I had to first give it up. I couldn't keep the pretty things for myself if I wanted to be a thoughtful friend sending heartfelt messages on lovely cards...

So I did the only thing I could to save a copy for myself - I took a photo of it, collected with other items in a kind of simple vignette. I felt very satisfied. I could send a "piece of my heart" on a carte postale to my friend and keep the memory of owning/sending it via the photo. Result!

Below is a collection of all the photos I've taken of each of the postcards before posting them off to friends and family.

I enjoyed this cake, though I know at least one person who tried it said it was a little too dry. I will also put it out there that though it was a very nice chocolate cake, I wouldn't describe it as a 'chocolate fudge cake'. Fudge indicates some extra level of chocolatey goodness to me that wasn't present in this recipe.

However, that said, I will owe that the recipe was reliable and was sufficient to make not one, but two large sized cakes.
About Mrs M Webber

Looking for information on Miss M. Webber wasn't as easy as I first thought. There's plenty a mention of Webber girls in the Brisbane newspapers from the 1930s through to the 1940s. There's a Miss J. Webber, a Miss E. Webber and a Miss M. Webber.

The point at where it gets murky is that in 1932 there are two mentions of a Miss. M. Webber. One is a golfing tournament at Victoria Park Golf Course. The other is a social article about the Pre-Marriage party of a Miss M. Webber and a Mr E. O'Hara.

So - if this 1932 Miss M. Webber was OUR Miss M. Webber, how could she still be listed as a 'Miss' in the cookbook which was printed in 1941? But then, why is our golfing Webber still listed as a 'Miss' in September after a pre-marriage party in June the same year?

There is another mention of a Miss M. Webber in 1947 - a wedding/honeymoon notice in which a Miss. M Webber was bridesmaid to Miss Joyce E. Sellars.

Though I like to imagine a great big to-do in which Miss M. Webber was engaged to O'Hara, broke it off and lived a fabulous life of a single girl, playing golf, attending dances and then being a bridesmaid over a decade later, I know that is a little more than far-fetched. It is far more likely that the Miss M. Webber we are looking for is the 1947 Miss M. Webber, who played bridesmaid for her friend in Clayfield.
It was bright and happy stripes of navy and apple green with daisies throughout. I immediately knew I wanted to make it into a 70s a-line skirt.

I bought the fabric for the princely sum of 50c and when I got home I picked out the perfect pattern from my stash for the project.

Lucky me had inherited my Grandma's collection of sewing patterns. There were only a scant few from the 60s and earlier but a large number of 70s patterns. The pattern I picked out was in my size so I didn't need to resize at all which was a bonus.

The pattern is from a company called 'Style' which seemed to be at its height during the 70s but gone by the end of the 80s. There are a lot of old copies of Style patterns floating around Australia and the UK (according to a quick ebay search) but not much at all from America. I suspect that it may be an Australian brand based on the fact that the pricing on the front of each pattern is in Australian dollar and New Zealand dollars.... but I can't find much about it on the interwebz so if anyone knows more about the company I'd be interested in hearing or getting a link.

It was very little effort to sew the skirt together as it was a simple four panel skirt. I did have to put some thought into cutting - to ensure that the lines would line up in chevrons at the front and back. I didn't get it 100% perfect but for a first attempt at matching patterns I was pretty pleased with the result.

I hemmed the skirt with bias binding as instructed by the pattern- a technique I will be repeating in the future as it looks great and neat and was so easy to do.

The other technique used on this skirt that was new for me was the use of petersham ribbon to line and stiffen the waist in the absence of a waistband. I followed the pattern's instructions which called for the petersham to be box-pleated at the front and back seams. This seemed like a great idea - until I wore the skirt and the petersham poked out like a little teepee on my belly. I've since cut the fold out of the petersham so that it doesn't stick out.

All in all, I'm pleased with the skirt. It's cute and Summery and easy to mix with the navy, white and green pieces already in my wardrobe. aineadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03269483214793793469noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377291612928010259.post-12204627246183057112014-01-04T03:01:00.002-08:002014-01-04T03:01:24.625-08:00The Bullivant SaleIt promised to be the most interesting vintage sale of the year in Brisbane. Carmel Bullivant, a wealthy socialite, was selling off her collection of vintage dresses, smalls and accessories to the public and store owners alike.
They are not of the ginormous frouffy type. Alone, each petticoat doesn't give much oompf but that has it's benefits. I can wear one to give a nice shape to a skirt or combine all three for some power-puff.

Because they are pretty things in their own right it's a bit sad that they don't often get seen - so I thought I'd share them on here.
It was months ago now but never too late to blog a thing. Right?

The venue:
I held the party in my home, which is a beautiful old Queenslander house. Though it was a little bit squishy, we all fit into the dining area with a table full of food and a sideboard for drinks and crockery.

The guests:

I had some of my favourite girls around, nine guests in total. The only rule I specified on the invitation was that a dress was mandatory! This wasn't a problem for the dress veterans who came in their own flavour of fashion. We did have one guest who was wearing a non-historical-costume dress for the first time in her adult life bought especially for the day. (Insert shocked face here)

Sassy D wore a gorgeous black vintage hat with a 50s frock and cardi while her sister Classy K was beautiful in 20s style. PoisonedKitty wore a very cute outfit in the gothic lolita style (a Japanese street fashion) while Little L wore her own personal brand of vintage meets sweet gyaru style. I tried to steal her hat... but she was too protective of it for me to get close.

The menu:
Drinks included Stockholm Blend tea (my favourite!) and punch made from the recipe I've already blogged about here.

Tea was served in a fine china tea service I inherited from my Nana with a Japanesque pink carnation pattern on the side (with a few non-matching trios to make up the numbers beyond what the tea service catered for!).

Punch was served in a large punch bowl my sister had inherited from my Nana and kindly loaned to me for the day with dainty sized matching punch cups.

Food included afternoon tea favourites like egg and lettuce sandwiches, brie and cranberry sandwiches, chocolate cake with chocolate ganache icing and scones with lemon and vanilla jam (generously bought along by a friend), Parmesan and tomato pesto pinwheels, lavender shortbread and a flummery charlotte. There was also a gorgeous berry tart generously bought by another guest.

The outfit:

I've already posted a full shot of my outfit for the day (a while ago, just after the party happened).

I wore a navy dress with red and olive paisley print over it. My favourite brooch, a Victorian-era bar brooch with little pearls and rubies pinned the front flap of my dress closed. I was still sporting my neat and newly cut hairdo, topped with a midnight blue hat which I'd scored for $5 from Retro Stop when it was closing down.

Black gloves and black pumps completed the outfit.

The Great Flummery Flop:
I had hopes and dreams pinned on the flummery charlotte. I had found the recipe in one of my old 50s cookbooks and loved the picture of the dessert. I was charmed by the idea of serving such an unusual and sweet looking dessert. In my mind's eye, guests would enter, appreciate the gorgeous pink flowers and then be distracted by the flummery charlotte beside it. They would be intrigued and would eagerly want to try a bit of that tasty treat. "Oh! I really must get the recipe! What is it called again!?"

Yes. My imagination really is like that.

It seemed simple enough. lady finger biscuits, banana slices across the bottom and then 'flummery' filling ontop. The recipe didn't include how to make flummery - it only called for an instant flummery mix made by a company that no longer exists. My mum offered me a recipe to make my own flummery but I had 'better ideas'. I would substitute instant chocolate pudding, the kind you just add milk, whip and then chill. Easy peasy. Instant dessert success!

In reality, the dessert looked like some unimaginably foul brown mix loaded ontop of unevenly stacked biscuits. Guests admired the flowers but then turned suspecious eyes on the ugly duckling dessert beside it. Only I and one other person tried it. It tasted awful. (Note to self: Never have instant chocolate pudding again. That which tastes awesome to a kid is not necessary awesome to an adult's palate.)
